Merlin and Nimue

by Will Wright

Merlin and Nimue were playing jacks

Merlin was cheating

Without magic he could never get past twozies

If Nimue minded

She didn’t show it

She was a natural at picking up things

Merlin was proof of that

Merlin asked if she knew the date

Somewhere in the first decade of the twenty-first century, she thought

Merlin figured that was close enough

For the thousandth time Merlin asked her

Are you death?”

No”

She replied

"Death can get to twelvezies"
